Primal Tension: The Tug-of-War Between Your Ancient Brain and Your Modern Goals
Deep within your ancient brain, your reptilian brain, a primal force whispers its directives. It's not concerned with chasing deadlines, acing exams, or building a fulfilling career. Its sole focus is survival, etched in the grooves of our evolutionary history. I call this ancient imperative Primal Tension. It constantly pulls us towards immediate gratification, risk aversion, and the pursuit of basic pleasures like food and sex.
Imagine it as a constant tug-of-war within you. On one side, there’s Primal Tension, urging you to hit the snooze button, indulge in that extra slice of cake, or avoid the challenging conversation. On the other side, your conscious mind, striving for long-term goals, healthy habits, and personal growth.
The Allure of the Comfort Zone:
Primal Tension thrives in the familiar. It whispers sweet nothings about staying in bed, watching another episode, or sticking to same old default routine. It makes the gym seem daunting, the healthy salad unappealing, and the unknown territory beyond your comfort zone downright frightening. This is because our ancient brain, forged in a time of scarcity and danger, prioritizes immediate survival over long-term benefits. It sees a skipped workout as saved energy, a gallon of ice cream as a burst of fuel, and staying in your comfort zone as avoiding potential threats.
The Roadblocks to Progress:
This Primal Tension can be a formidable foe in our pursuit of personal goals.
It can:
Hinder healthy habits: Late-night snacking, procrastination, and unhealthy coping mechanisms all stem from the primal urge for immediate pleasure and avoidance of discomfort.
Sabotage long-term goals: The desire for instant gratification can make us prioritize short-term wins over long-term progress, leading to abandoned goals and unfulfilled dreams.
Limit personal growth: Stepping outside our comfort zone is crucial for personal growth, but primal tension often keeps us tethered to the familiar, hindering our ability to learn, explore, and evolve.
Befriending the Beast, Not Banishing It
The good news is, Primal Tension isn't an enemy to be vanquished. It's a fundamental part of our being, a reminder of our deeply ancient roots. Instead of fighting it, we can learn to acknowledge its presence, understand its motivations, and harness its power for good.
Here's how:
Awareness is key: The first step is recognizing and acknowledging the pull of Primal Tension in your daily life. Notice the voice that whispers to skip the exercise, indulge in comfort food, or avoid difficult conversations.
Challenge its directives: Don't blindly obey. Question the urges and analyze the long-term consequences of giving in. Often, the short-term pleasure isn't worth the long-term detriment.
Make conscious choices: Don't let your primal brain be the sole decision-maker. Engage your conscious mind, weigh the pros and cons, and choose actions that align with your long-term goals and values.
Find inspiring substitutes: Channel your primal urges towards positive pursuits. Exercise can be a great outlet for the fight-or-flight response, while healthy eating can fuel your body and mind for optimal performance. Instead of engaging with pornography and its salacious companions, determine how you can channel your curiosity and creativity into enhancing the lives of others.
Celebrate small victories: Every time you choose your long-term goals over immediate gratification, you're winning the tug-of-war. Acknowledge and celebrate these victories, no matter how small, to reinforce positive behavior.
Remember, Primal Tension is not a flaw, but a force to be reckoned with.
By understanding its motivations and making conscious choices, we can transform it from a roadblock to a powerful ally in our pursuit of a fulfilling life. So, the next time you feel the tug of the ancient beast, don't be afraid. Acknowledge it, understand it, and then, with a gentle but firm hand, guide yourself towards the path of long-term growth and well-being.

Learn: Default Mode Escape Velocity
Default Mode Escape Velocity: Breaking Free from the gravitational pull of Primal Tension
How many times have we wanted to break free of a circumstance, but the gravity of the situation seemed to keep us locked in place? This has ever been the thoughts (many of them unconscious) generated by the lower brain. In Undaunted, we refer to the pull of the lower brain as Primal Tension. This entire purpose of Undaunted is to enable us to achieve what we might call "Default Mode Escape Velocity." This can be looked at like launching a spacecraft, highlighting the need for strategic action to overcome the instinctive, lower brain's hold.
The Gravity of Primal Tension:
Our lower brain, and it's obsession with efficiency, seeking pleasure, and avoiding pain, acts much like gravity. It's an ever-present force driving basic needs and survival instincts. Just as escaping Earth's gravity requires calculated effort, overcoming the pull of Primal Tension necessitates conscious intention and planning.
Achieving Escape Velocity:
Nothing man-made ever escapes the earth's gravity by accident. Just like a rocket needs sufficient thrust to break free from Earth's gravitational pull, we need a structured approach to overcome the directives of our lower brain.
This involves the following:
Escape Velocity is Not Elimination:
Reaching escape velocity doesn't mean we've eliminated gravity. Imagine a spacecraft in orbit; gravity is still present, but our momentum keeps us from being pulled back. Similarly, Primal Tension remains, but through conscious effort and strategic planning, we can propel ourselves forward at a pace that essentially offsets its influence.
The Magic of Discovery:
Once we achieve "Default Mode Escape Velocity" in any aspect of life, a new world of possibilities opens up. We gain the freedom to explore our full potential, pursue our goals, and experience the joy of discovery and achievement.
In Undaunted, we emphasize the refreshing reality that acknowledging Primal Tension, while strategically leveraging our higher cognitive abilities, we can break free from the limitations of our lower brain's default mode and propel ourselves towards a life filled with purpose, growth, and fulfillment.

This involves the following:
- Acknowledging the reality of Primal Tension: Without understanding and acknowledging gravity, we'd never get any satellites into orbit. In the very same way, recognizing the fundamental role of Primal Tension and its role in our survival and decision-making is crucial in order to use our higher brain to achieve our true desires.
- Respecting its Power: Primal Tension isn't inherently bad; it keeps us safe and focused on basic needs. You wouldn't be alive without it.
- Strategic Planning: Engaging our higher-level thinking to plan actions and goals that propel us beyond our instinctive and basic urges.
- Intentional Execution: Taking deliberate actions to follow through on our plans, counteracting the pull of the Primal Tension.

Learn: The Call to Create
Imagine waking up each day not just to the humdrum of routine, but to the exhilarating spark of purpose. Imagine feeling not just the weight of obligations, but the invigorating thrill of discovery and growth. This isn't a fantasy; it's the potential within every human being, waiting to be unlocked by the power of our higher brain functions.
Our brains, much like our homes, have different levels. The lower levels, often referred to as the "default mode network," handle basic functions that keep us running on autopilot. This mode is essential for survival, but it can also lead to a sense of stagnancy and a lack of fulfillment. However, within us lies a higher level, a penthouse suite we haven't fully explored: the prefrontal cortex.
This is the command center of our higher brain functions. It's where critical thinking, creativity, and goal-setting reside. It's the part of us that yearns for growth, accomplishment, and a life imbued with meaning. By consciously engaging this powerful region, we can break free from the autopilot of the lower brain and embark on a journey of self-discovery and purposeful living.
Causal coaching empowers this transition. It's about acknowledging the potential within and equipping ourselves with the tools to activate it. Through techniques like self-reflection, goal identification, and action planning, we can learn to:
This journey is not without its challenges. There will be moments when the familiar comfort of the default mode beckons us back. However, with consistent effort and the support of a coach, we can cultivate the neural pathways that lead to a purposeful and fulfilling life.
Remember, the spark of purpose lies within you. By harnessing the power of your higher brain, you can break free from the limitations of the default mode and discover the joy of living a life filled with purpose, accomplishment, and continuous growth. Embrace the journey, and unleash the potential that lies dormant within.

- Challenge limiting beliefs: The default mode thrives on familiarity and comfort zones. Causal coaching helps us identify and question limiting beliefs that hold us back from reaching our full potential.
- Embrace the power of "why": When we understand the "why" behind our goals, the "what" and "how" become infused with meaning and purpose. Causal coaching guides us in uncovering the deeper motivations that fuel our desires.
- Design a life, not just react to it: The lower brain is reactive, responding to external stimuli. With causal coaching, we learn to take a proactive stance, setting goals and designing a life that aligns with our values and aspirations.

Personal Output Notes:
In Undaunted, personal outputs are a vital key to unlocking the insights and distinctions that will propel you along your journey. We learned about thought downloads last week. This weeks personal outputs are a two thought downloads. The first one will address the role Primal Tension has played in your life. Be as open and up front with yourself as you can about this. Be honest and real. As counterintuitive as it may sound, it's benefitting you and hindering you, all at the same time. Explore this in your thought download.
More specifically, however, what are things in your life you essentially manage to do, or not do, essentially on auto pilot, that keep you apathetic, pleasure focused, and averse to discomfort? Primal Tension is at the core. What's your physical fitness like? How are your relationships with your significant other and children? How are your friendships? What's your relationship with pornography? The truth behind any of these questions is rooted in how much Primal Tension's gravitational pull is dictating your life.
Our next thought download for this week is about your call to create. What benefits and challenges are before you as you explore and give heed to this call? What do you want to create, experience, or forge? The Undaunted journey is one that takes us from apathy, boredom, and critiscism, and into Action, Belief, and Connection. It's our higher brain's call to create that will make all this happen. Really begin to think about what's important to you. How will you harness the power of your higher brain's call to create, and truly capitalize on your one wild and precious life?
Our last personal output for this week will be to write out a model per day. The CTFAR model we learned about last week. "The Model" helps us to navigate any challenge and opportunity in life. We want to be able to see the world through the lens of the model, and as we do, we begin to break free from the gravitational pull of Primal Tension.
